Accessibility

This site should work for everyone who visits it. This page says what it is built to, what is known to be imperfect, and how to tell us about a barrier.

The standard

The site is built to conform with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 at level AA. It uses semantic HTML, so headings and landmarks are announced correctly; every interactive element is reachable and operable by keyboard with a visible focus state; text and background colours meet or exceed the AA contrast ratio; text resizes to 200 percent without loss of content; motion is reduced for readers whose systems ask for that; and the layout works at phone widths without horizontal scrolling. A skip link at the top of each page jumps past the header. Because the site carries no JavaScript, nothing here depends on scripting to be readable or navigable.

Known limits

The paper texture behind the pages is decorative, is applied with a blend mode, and is hidden from assistive technology. Long legal pages use a table of contents that is hidden at narrow widths to avoid duplicating the headings that follow it.

Telling us about a barrier

If any part of this site is hard to use, write to matthew@guardianresearch.io, describe the page and what happened, and we will fix it and reply. We treat an access barrier as a defect.
